Just when our members thought they were getting a handle on refining their DMP, we threw a curve ball – another requirement! But take a breath, it’s the last thing we’re adding!
This is the third week of writing and revising our DMP’s, and this week we added SMART goals.
Ok – what’s that?
If you know where you want to go, but don’t have a map, you’re never going to get there, so it’s time to add SMART goals! Is your goal SPECIFIC? Saying to subby that you want “to lose weight” means nothing. Be specific about it – in the present tense – “I weigh less than 190 lbs” .
That’s a good start, What does subby do with that? – um, not much until he knows more. MEASURABLE – that number on the scale is measurable for sure.

The next step is ACHIEVABLE. Can you weight less than 190 lbs? Sure you can! Then there is REALISTIC. Is it realistic for you to obtain this goal? That depends on the next step – TIMED. Your goal must be timed, or subby doesn’t know when to create this new reality. If it’s October 1 and you weigh 350 lbs, it is not realistic for you to release 161 lbs by November 1; but, it is realistic if you plan to lose two pounds a week by 18 months hence, that is absolutely achievable!
So which do you think subby responds to better? “I want to lose weight.” or “I am thrilled to weigh less than 190 lbs. by April 30, 2023.” The goal is SPECIFIC, MEASURABLE, ACHIEVABLE, REALISTIC and TIMED
Always be SMART with your Goals!

Awesome Blog.
Getting my weight to 190 is in my DMP. When you said
“I weigh less than 190 lbs”
All I thought was WAY TOO THIN…. But Subby doesn’t judge so… Look, it’s a walking stick with eyes LOL
It will be what it will be!
Nicely put, Nancy! That makes it easy to understand 🙂
Though I can’t follow you, Darren – 190 lb for me is no walking stick, rather the complete opposite (I’m below 130lb) – a great example of how perspective makes ALL the difference! 😀
Love the blog post
SMART goals are awesome way to go forward.

SMART is way better than the alternative!
Perfect timing! I know I need to do more research on smart goals concerning financial goals, and I was thinking about it today while I was doing some house chores. I love it when I get confirmation in such a big way. This has been (past tense) 😉 the biggest monster for me all my life. I choose to make it fun and easy. Thank you for this post, and all of your guidance so far!
It is so great having you in our tribe, Elle!
